Temple Avodah and our members are an active part of the Oceanside, New York and the surrounding Communities. Temple members particiapte in many wonderful events and programs throughout the year both inside and outside of Temple.
Temple Avodah is a major player in the Oceanside Community, a major driver on the Oceanside Interfaith Council among other organizations including:
Oceanside Interfaith Council: composed of clergy and lay members of five churches and two synagogues. Some of their ongoing activities Include: Thanksgiving Interfaith Service; Thanksgiving Community Dinner; 9/11 commemoration; Human Relations Day at the local High School.
Long Beach Food and Friendship INN (Soup Kitchen): Our congregants join others in preparing and serving lunch to local guests. The program runs Monday -Friday. We also deliver surplus food from Temple functions and Temple families.
Yom Hashoah Planning Committee: Under the auspices of JECOCO- Jewish Community Council of Oceanside, the three Jewish denominations have representatives that plan the annual Yom Hashoah Commemoration.
Oceanside Community Service: Representatives of the School and community assist those in need by providing financial assistance, food and clothing to the needy in the community. Recipients are referred by various civic community organizations and the public school social workers. Here is a photo of some of the Temple Avodah team at the annual "Turkey-Shoot" , an OCS event that pairs adults with High School students as they deliver food and turkeys to the needy in town.
Hatzilu Rescue Organization assists Jewish individuals and families through providing social services recommendations and by giving them food and money on a monthly basis so that they can live with dignity.
And when employees at Mercy Hospital struggle with their Christmas holiday scheduling, Temple Avodah members step up to the challenge and volunteer their personal time to run the gift shop and the information desk so that the employees can be with their families.
Temple Avodah Volunteers
Photos of just some of the volunteers who went to Mercy Hospital on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to give some of the regulars the time to be with their families. This is just one of the many community activities completed by volunteers from Temple Avodah. Ira Katz was the project leader.
